In Defense of Love Why Catholics Should be for Gay...

The topic of homosexual marriages has been a very hotly contested issue and has in recent years become an even more heavily debated topic, particularly in the Catholic Church. Now, Catholics have always had a very definite stance on homosexuality and more importantly homosexual marriage. They have always had the belief that marriage is, and should remain, exclusively between a man and a woman. I too, being a Catholic myself, held this belief for quite some time until I actually looked into scripture, and I discovered that the Catholic Church has been thinking backwards. Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, homosexual marriage has always been deemed an abomination by scripture, tradition, and holy fathers, but through scripture†¦show more content†¦That is not to say that everyone is going straight to hell if they are homosexual. â€Å"Every human being is called to receive the gift of divine son-ship, to become a child of God by grace. However to receive this gift we must reject, sin including homosexual behavior† (Brom). Rome instructs that we do not judge the sinner; we only judge the sin. While we are taught to not pass judgment on gays for being homosexual, we are to oppose any and all homosexual acts. Pope John Paul II spoke extensively on gay marriage and teaches that, â€Å"The presence of the feminine element, alongside the male element and together with it, signifies an enrichment for men in the whole perspective of his history† (Pope John Paul II). Pope John Paul II raises an excellent point; there are fantastic benefits to marriage enjoyed by both spouses. There are many health benefits to marriage: including longer lifespan, improved overall happiness, someone to monitor your health, someone to live for, and shorter stays in hospital. However, the question remains that if marriage is such a wonderful, beneficial thing, why are gays prevented from participating? Well the Vatican has many answers that can all be conveniently found in one volume, the Bible. One need only look into the second chapter of the good book to find the first scripture used against gay marriage.
